The TL;DR for Amy Sussex of The Business Management Co.

Amy Sussex helps founder-led Canadian service businesses become less dependent on their owners and more valuable because of it.

Amy’s clients have already proven their businesses work; what they're missing is the structure that lets those businesses run, grow, and eventually transfer without them at the centre of every decision.

Through The Business Management Co., Amy work at the intersection most people skip: after the business is built, before it's ready to sell. That means strengthening systems, leadership, and documentation not just for efficiency, but because clarity creates value.

Whether a founder is years from an exit or actively preparing for one, Amy’s work is the same; reduce founder dependency, increase transferability, and build a business someone else would actually want to own.

Amy believe founders deserve more than a business that just gives them another job. They deserve to build one worth buying.

Tell us more about your business

I’m the founder of The Business Management Co., where I help founder-led Canadian service businesses build the operational foundation they need to become less dependent on their owners, more transferable, and more valuable over time.

My work involves business operations, founder independence, and exit readiness. I help business owners identify where too much knowledge, decision-making, client dependency, or operational responsibility still lives with them, and then build the systems, processes, leadership structure, and infrastructure needed to change that.

That might involve documenting processes, strengthening team accountability, improving client delivery, creating operational visibility, or helping a founder move from being the person who holds everything together to leading a business that can operate without them at the centre of every decision.

I work with established business owners who have already built something successful but recognize that revenue alone doesn't necessarily mean they have a business that someone else could successfully own or operate.

My workday is a mix of strategy, problem-solving, client conversations, operational planning, and getting into the practical details that make a business stronger. I might be reviewing how a team operates, building out systems, or helping a founder determine what needs to change to create more freedom and long-term value.

People find me through referrals, networking, social media, my podcast, The Exit Ready Business, and conversations around business growth, systems, succession, and preparing a business for its future.

In one or two sentences, what specific problem does your business solve for your clients?

I help founder-led service businesses become less dependent on their owner and more valuable and transferable so the business can eventually run, sell, or transition without everything falling apart the moment the founder steps back.

Recent milestone you've celebrated in your business

My podcast, The Exit Ready Business, I have recently rebranded too and love the direction and conversations I am having with other Canadians. So many people don’t think of their business as an asset when they start it or the option to sell it. Another thing I am celebrating in my business is I am in the process of creating the Exit Ready Business Summit for Canadian founders. Similar to my podcast I want to have deeper conversations and bring more awareness to the possibilities that can happen when you build a business. I am also the co-author of the book Success: Redefined: A New Era of Empowerment. This was such an amazing experience writing with other 11 female entrepreneurs and sharing our stories.

What is a recent investment you’ve made in your business

One of the most meaningful investments I’ve made recently has been investing in the strategic direction of my business and getting much clearer about the position I want to own in the market. I have been working with Jan Ditchfield and this not only helped to reshape the positioning of the work I do but also my podcast!

As my business evolved, I realized I didn’t want to be known simply as someone who helps businesses get organized or implement systems. Those things are part of my work, but they are not the whole picture.

I wanted to build a business around a bigger and more meaningful problem: helping founders create companies that can operate beyond them and retain value beyond their day-to-day involvement.

What changed after that investment? Why do you see it as an investment, not an expense?

Any investment I have ever made I have always looked at it as an investment and not an expense. Some have been better than others but I always learn, grow and there is a lesson in there for me. The investment with Jan, gave me total clarity on who I serve, what I actually offer, and why it matters. I went from a generalist "operations support" business to a clearly positioned advisor. It's an investment because it changed the trajectory of the business and I'm the person who helps founders build something transferable.

What would you tell a new entrepreneur who's considering investing in the same thing, but is hesitant?

I am someone who has spent thousands of dollars growing, learning and evolving personally and professionally. From courses, certifications, to mentors, to communities, events, retreats, my team, my brand, etc. I always see value in investing. However, I would encourage them to make sure the investment is connected to a real business need and not just something that sounds exciting in the moment. The right investment should help you make clearer decisions, close a meaningful gap, or build something that continues to create value after the initial investment is over.

I’d also remind them that investing in your business doesn’t always mean buying another course or hiring another expert. Sometimes the most valuable investment is getting the right clarity, support, or structure to actually implement what you already know.

When you do invest, give yourself the time and commitment to use what you’re learning. The investment is only part of the equation, what you do with it matters just as much.

Now for some fun stuff!

Always…

Always have fun, enjoy the journey and remember your voice matters.

Never…

Never forget to create space and time for yourself. It is easy to get lost in the business but don’t forget your why behind what you are doing and why you are doing it.

Advice for other entrepreneurs, who are slightly less far along…

Don’t put people on a pedestal. They are trying to figure it out just like you. They are just at a different stage in business but they have bad days, stressors too.

What is a tool, resource, podcast, book or person you’ve invested in that’s added value to your entrepreneurial journey

These tools have made my life so much easier! Clickup, Dubsado, Fathom

  • Podcasts I love: Community by Kristina Bartold, The Small Business School Podcast by Staci Millard

  • Audio book: The Mountain is You by Brianna West

  • Book: Success Redefined: A New Era of Empowerment

Favourite way to wind down after a long workweek

Watching my kids play hockey, soccer or whatever activity they are into.

I love episodes of Friends, Schitt’s Creek or Modern Family. Familiar and funny!

Before starting my workday, I make sure to…

Practice gratitude that I get to drop my kids off at school every morning. Then when I’m in my office I look at my vision board. It's easy to be caught up in the day to day but it’s a beautiful reminder of remembering my vision and what I’m working towards.

Best part of my work is…

That not every day is the same and I get to create what my days look like. One day it’s implementing a new system for a client, the next it’s being a guest on a podcast or recording for my own podcast, it’s doing an event where I meet other amazing business owners or going for a walk in the middle of the day cause I need to ground myself in nature. That is the amazing thing about the work I do and owning a business, it’s having the flexibility to structure your days and the systems to support that structure in your day.

Last vacation you took (and where did you go)

Oh this year has been the year of vacations!! My husband and I went to the Dominican for a wedding with 40 other people in April. We took the kids to Disney in Florida in May and I’m heading back to the Dominican in November for a High Vibe Women retreat. I hadn’t travelled in a few years so I guess this was the year I decided too! LOL
